Top Tips for Keeping Warm This Winter
We are all feeling the pinch at the moment with the cost of living rising and the heating bills becoming a worry for many across the country. As the temperatures drop, at Big Bull Self Storage we have a little look at ways to keep warm this winter.
Heat the human not the home. Use layers of clothing, it is recommended to use several thinner layers rather than one thick layer. The first layer should sit close to your body and touch the skin as this will help keep the heat in. Have a look at the oversized hooded blanket style sweatshirts. They are big and warm and will fit over multiple layers of clothing for that extra layer. There are lots of fun designs around, so you’ll be sure to find the right one for you.
Have a look in to getting an electric blanket for the bed, they may be a few quid to buy at the start, but they’re not too expensive and the running costs are actually really low per use. It’s estimated that they usually run for less than 1p per hour. This will help warm the bed before you get in, meaning you can save a bit of money of your heating bill so this is an excellent low cost option. Put the blanket on about 5 mins before you get in and it’ll be nice and toasty for your arrival.
Put an extra blanket on the bed, or have a look at the fleecy bedding that is available. You can also get heated blankets that you could put on top of you.
Wear socks in bed. While this might be a strange idea to most, wearing socks in bed can keep you a lot warmer than you’d think. A lot of people have naturally cold feet and loosing warmth through feet is quite common. So find your fluffiest socks and snuggle up!
Use a hot water bottle, or one of those wheat bags that go in the microwave to warm up. I always keep one close to me when I’m feeling chilly, working from home or sat in the evening watching TV. I can top it up in the microwave and they’re much safer than hot water bottles as they’re not likely to leak hot water, so they are also safe for children. There are some cute designs around too, I personally borrow my daughters unicorn warmie and keep it near me when I need a little heat boost.
Try to reduce draughts around doors and windows. Fit draught excluders where you might feel the cold air coming through and check that your letterbox isn’t letting in any cold air.
When you go outside ensure you are wrapped up warm with a coat, hat, scarf and gloves. Have a look at the various options for heated items, such as a heated gillet or USB heated gloves. There are some pricey ones out there, buy have a look around and you can get some cheaper options so shop around and get something to keep you warm while out in the cold.
Only use the heating in the rooms that you actually need it in. Why not try turning off the radiators in the rooms that you know you won’t need to use, and keep that door closed. If you have a spare bedroom that you know you don’t need to use right now, turn the radiator off and keep the door closed to stop the extra warmth from the house heating that room.
